The creator behind Starnotch Costumes

Michelle Gadula is an all around seamstress.  She can be referred to as an alteration-solutions expert for any clothing drama. She’s also a creator of clothing for the cat walk of everyday life. Bridal, prom wear and competitive dance costumes are her areas of expertise when it comes to fulfilling a clients ideas or needs.

Since graduating from Fashion Technique and Design at Sheridan College in 97’ her career has branched out into many theatres and onto many stages.  Over 20 seasons in the Shaw Festivals’ Wardrobe Department has been the back bone of her industry knowledge.  Throughout this time she has also worked at Can Stage Theatre and on The Lion King production.  She spent some time floating on the high seas as the Wardrobe Mistress with Norwegian Cruise Lines.  Having come back to dry land she then joined the backstage crew of the Avalon Theatre at the Fallsview Casino. It was a joy and privilege for her to work with such major talents as Rick Springfield, Englebert Humperdinck, Regis and Joy Philbin, Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Roger Hodgeson, to name a few, as well as the large production shows that graced that stage.

One of the unique commissions she worked on was a design collaboration and costume build for a female magician.  This unique request was to incorporate acrobatic skills with magic. It required a one-of-a-kind design and the outcome was a performance that was honoured by David Copperfield himself.  First fitting with a client in a handstand!  In her winter season she can be found working with local dance studios creating competitive costumes. Once she designed a Gymnaestrada costume for a senior group who compete internationally. This design won her honourable mention in
Sweden in the judging notes from the head of the organization for its appropriateness and being complimentary to the age group.

It’s a joy for her to see the performers bring these costumes to life.  It’s just as wonderful for her to be a part of someones wedding day or prom when she sees the smile on their face when their dream dress fits and sets them on their way with them feeling like a princess ready for the ball.
